Strangers on the Plane

I'm in 8A, 8B is empty, 8C strikes a conversation."Where are you from in Haiti?" "How long have you lived in the US?" "How long is your trip?" Simple passenger "get to know". After a few answered questions, 8C feels we're no longer strangers.

"Are you married?"
"Happily."
"To a Haitian man?"
"No."
"Why not?"
...sigh
"Is it strange he doesn't share your culture?"
"Absolutely not."

...minutes pass

"So do you have a number I could reach you at?"
"Absolutely not."

8B is empty.

Delayed

A 9:15 flight has turned into a "God knows when" flight. We've been sitting ducks on the plane for the past hr and half. With tropical storm Emily looming about, hopefully we get to fly today.

On one of the hottest, most humid, most uncomfortable days of the summer, I became an aunt.

SO I've been trying to spend as much time as possible away from the computer, which is the death of me. However, that means I don't keep up with the whole blogging thing either. So I'm going to make a conscious effort to update as much as possible, especially since there's lots going to be going on soon enough. A new baby will be joining our family any second, I'm going back to the motherland in less than a month, and and and.... its still summer.

Some highlights from the days past:

Left my phone at work and naturally I had to go all the way back into the city to get it. The sidekick came along and we took a little nightly romantic stroll.

Hate vs. Hate

"I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that"
— Martin Luther King Jr.

Today marks the death of Osama Bin Laden. I couldn't have said it better than the Dr.

UPDATED: Apparently the above quote is partly MLK's and partly that of someone else's sentiments. Either way.. it still rings true. The death of bin Laden should be a time that we sit back and reflect, not necessarily to celebrate. The correct quote from his book "Strength To Love" is as follows:

Are we seeking power for power’s sake? Or are we seeking to make the world and our nation better places to live. If we seek the latter, violence can never provide the answer. The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral, begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy. Instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it. Through violence you may murder the liar, but you cannot murder the lie, nor establish the truth. Through violence you may murder the hater, but you do not murder hate. In fact, violence merely increases hate. So it goes. Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.
